Our trip to the Philippines was planned with a return flight to Fiumicino, near Rome. The flights back to Italy from the Philippines hit us a lot harder than the flights there. The Best Western Hotel Riviera Fiumicino (€51, breakfast included) was a good choice for a one night stop-gap.
We would be heading back to our home base in Malta the following day.
Even though we were flying with Emirates, we had a 5-hour stopover in Dubai which just extended the misery. By the time we got back to Rome, I was thankful we had only a short commute to our hotel in Fiumicino.
The hotel operates a van shuttle service between the airport and the hotel for just €6 per person.

All we wanted was a shower and a doze in a comfortable bed, and that’s exactly what we got.
In the late afternoon we checked out the seafront promenade for any likely-looking restaurants.
We found several good candidates. In the end, we opted for the Rosso Corallo restaurant, where we ate steak with some local Italian wine. Dinner for two came to less than €50.
The next morning, we enjoyed our first European breakfast in the hotel, and there was plenty of choice on what to eat. After getting used to the Philippines style of breakfast, we felt very indulged.
Then, a final shuttle to the airport, and a short hop back to Malta.
