Our trip to the Philippines was planned with a return flight to Fiumicino, near Rome. The flights back to Italy from the Philippines hit us a lot harder than the flights going there. Even though we were flying with Emirates, we had a 5-hour stopover in Dubai which just extended the misery.
So once we arrived in Rome we were keen to find a hotel close to the airport. We planned to spend one night in Fiumicino to recover from our journey before returning to the airport and heading back to our home base in Malta the following day.
The Best Western Hotel Riviera Fiumicino (€51, breakfast included) was a good choice for a one night stop-gap.
By the time we got to Rome, we were thankful we had only a short commute to our pre-booked hotel in Fiumicino.
Best Western Hotel Riviera Fiumicino
One of the reasons for choosing the Best Western Hotel Riviera Fiumicino was because the hotel operates a van shuttle service between the airport and the hotel for just €6 per person.
All we wanted was a shower and a doze in a comfortable bed, and that’s exactly what we got.
We checked into the hotel in the late afternoon. After settling in we wandered around the seafront promenade in search of any likely-looking restaurants.
We found several good candidates. In the end, we opted for the Rosso Corallo restaurant, where we ate steak with some local Italian wine. After spending several weeks surviving on bland Filipino food, we were more than ready for a decent Italian meal.
Dinner for two was good and came to less than €50.
The next morning, we enjoyed our first European breakfast in the hotel, and there was plenty of choice on what to eat. After getting used to the Philippines style of breakfast, we felt very indulged.
Then, a final shuttle to the airport, and a short hop back to Malta.
