Island Hopping from Phuket to Penang ποΈ via Langkawi
From Thai Sands to Malaysian Charms: A Whimsical Island Hop
So, you’ve landed in the vibrant chaos of Southeast Asia, specifically Phuket, and you’re contemplating your next move.
What better way to soak up the region’s diverse vibes than by island hopping? Our own four-week Malaysian adventure kicked off with a delightful (and occasionally bewildering) journey from Phuket to Penang, with a crucial pit stop in Langkawi.
Now, you might glance at a map and think, “Oh, they’re practically neighbours!” And you’d be right, geographically speaking. But these three islands are about as similar as chalk and cheese.
Cameron Highlands πππΆββοΈπ± Malaysia
Why you should ditch the beach (just for a bit). Cameron Highlands is a perfect antidote to the equatorial sizzle.
Visa Runner Malaysia-Thailand
If you're planning an extended stay in Malaysia you have to renew the visa you're given on arrival. This is referred to as making a βvisa runβ.
Ipoh & the Lost World of Tambun
Ipoh is rich in history & cultural, but one of its highlights is the Lost World of Tambun, a theme park offering a blend of adventure & relaxation.
Malay Peninsula West Coast
If you're planning a multi-destination road trip, then booking an open-jaw flight can be a godsend.
Penang Malaysia - Welcome to China
On a first visit to Penang, you could be forgiven for thinking yourself in China: This Malaysian island is home to a disproportionate percentage of ethnic Chinese.
Langkawi Accommodation Options
From β¬22 to β¬700 per night, your accommodation options are varied enough, but are the pricier venues good value for money?

Island Hopping: Phuket to Penang
The first couple of weeks of this 4-week trip to Malaysia involved island hopping from Phuket to Penang, stopping off in between in Langkawi. Despite their close proximity to each other, these are 3 very different types of island.
Georgetown - A Cultural Smorgasbord
There's even a Tesco's on the outskirts of Georgetown, but don't get too excited. This is like no Tesco's we've ever visited in Europe, with mainly unrecognizable brands.
Langkawi Island Life π¦
Langkawiβs archipelago comprises 99 thickly-forested islands dating back half a billion years.

Climbing Gunung Raya
We were alone and a long way from any help climbing Gunung Raya, and as in all the best horror movies we had no mobile signal.
π Beaches, Banter & Santa π
Can psychedelic taxis, brainfreeze ice lollies and coffee-flavoured tea deter the SandSpice team on this raucous Christmas road-'trip' through Malaysia?
Langkawi Jet Ski Adventure
We saw Langkawi from an angle that 90% of tourists miss, pushing ourselves to a limit we usually reserve for the buffet line.

It was raining but the crew anticipated this, providing a covered gangway & colorful red umbrellas. A nice final touch to our AirAsia inflight experience.
Phuket Thailand
Many foreigners - especially Russians - treat Phuket Thailand as a 2nd home, making a periodic visa-run to Malaysia to extend their stay.
Pangkor Island, Malaysia π π΄πΆποΈ
Pangkor is not the biggest of islands, and it's definitely not the most famous, but that's part of its appeal.
Our starting point, Phuket, often gets a bad rap for being overly commercial, and honestly, it’s not entirely unfair.
Think bustling Patong Beach, neon lights, and a general sense of liveliness that never really quits. It’s the kind of place where you can find anything and everything, from tailor shops to vibrant nightlife, and it definitely caters to the masses. It’s a fantastic entry point for the uninitiated, offering all the bells and whistles of a well-trodden tourist path.
But then, a short hop south, and you arrive in Langkawi, a world away. This Malaysian gem is significantly less developed, exuding a wonderfully laid-back, almost sleepy, charm. Here, you’re looking at lush rainforests, duty-free shopping (a real perk!), and pristine beaches that feel a million miles from Phuket’s energetic hum.
It’s the perfect antidote to sensory overload, offering a chance to truly unwind and connect with nature.
Penang’s Cultural Kaleidoscope and Culinary Delights
Forget the beaches for a moment; Penang is a vibrant tapestry of Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences, particularly evident in its capital, George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
It is, without a doubt, the most culturally diverse of the three islands, offering an immersive experience that goes beyond sunbathing and jet skis. From historical temples and mosques to the intoxicating aromas of char kway teow and nasi kandar, Penang food is a journey in itself, often cited as the culinary capital of Malaysia.
Planning Your Perfect Island Adventure
So, whether you’re seeking the lively buzz of Phuket island tours, the tranquil escape of Langkawi resorts, or the rich heritage and best food in Penang, this island-hopping route truly offers something for every type of traveler. It’s a fantastic way to experience the multifaceted beauty of both Thailand and Malaysia in one seamless (mostly!) trip.
If this sounds like your kind of escapade, and you’re keen to dive into the nitty-gritty, don’t forget to check out our comprehensive Malaysia 4-week trip plan, maps, and budget for all the essential details to make your journey as smooth and amusing as ours.
Why just visit one island when you can hop between three distinct worlds?
