Rome’s Prima Vista Lounge 🥐 A Relaxing Airport Retreat
A long-haul flight from Rome. What could be more civilised?
We found ourselves with a few hours to spare at Rome’s Fiumicino airport, that sprawling monument to modern travel, before embarking on (what some would call) an epic journey to Malaysia. What, we wondered, could we do with this precious window of time? The answer, as it so often is, was to locate a quiet corner, escape the hordes, and consume everything in sight.
This is the story of how we ended up in the Prima Vista Lounge, a place that promised peace and delivered… well, a perfectly acceptable amount of it.

Fiumicino Airport, Rome
The Unavoidable Truth: Why Rome is Our Go-To Hub 🍝
Let’s be honest, getting anywhere worthwhile from Malta (our European base) is a bit of a palaver. You either endure a layover or remortgage the house for a direct flight.
We, being perpetually frugal (some might say tight), have developed a fondness for using Rome as our little launchpad to the wider world, particularly South-East Asia.
Companies like Emirates, Qatar, and Etihad all operate out of Rome, which, let’s be frank, means there’s a good chance of finding a bargain. We’ve found that even factoring in the cost of a budget flight to Rome and a cheap hotel for a night, we’re still coming out ahead.
It’s all a numbers game, right?
Sometimes, though, the timings align in such a way that an overnight stay isn’t needed. Instead, we have a lengthy layover, a stretch of time that’s too long to be spent pacing the terminals but not quite long enough to justify leaving the airport entirely.
This is where the airport lounge comes in. A beacon of hope, a potential sanctuary. Or, as it often turns out, a glorified waiting room with slightly nicer crisps.
A Faint Glimmer of Sanity in the Bedlam
Walking through Fiumicino is a proper assault on the senses. The noise, the people, the hurried, frantic energy of it all. It’s a sensory overload that makes you want to curl into a ball and hibernate until your boarding call.
So, when we arrived at the entrance of the Prima Vista Lounge, we felt a small, quiet sense of optimism. The kind of feeling you get when you find a ten-euro note in an old coat pocket.
We stepped over the threshold and into another world entirely. The noise of the terminal faded into a distant hum. The scent of unbridled humanity and perfume samples was replaced by a sterile, almost academic cleanliness.
It was like going from a rowdy pub on a Saturday night to a hushed library on a Tuesday afternoon.
We were ready for a bit of pampering.
The Tastes of… Well, Italy, Actually 🥐
The first order of business, as always, was to assess the sustenance situation.
We were not disappointed.
The Prima Vista Lounge, to its credit, does not skimp on the comestibles. We were presented with an array of what appeared to be actual, edible food. A truly welcome surprise.
- A buffet of hot dishes: We spotted what looked like a pasta dish and immediately zeroed in. It was a perfectly adequate fusilli with pesto. It wasn’t Mamma Luda’s Sunday lunch, but it was a damn sight better than a squashed sandwich from a vending machine. We took full advantage.
- A surprisingly decent selection of pastries: We’re not talking about a half-hearted croissant here. We’re talking proper Italian pastries. Flaky, buttery, and so sweet they made our teeth ache just looking at them. We took one of each. For research purposes, naturally.
- An impressive array of beverages: From lukewarm coffee that we doctored with what we think was milk to a selection of soft drinks that looked slightly less appealing. The real star, however, was the wine. We were in Italy, so it would have been rude not to. We poured ourselves a small glass (or two) of a rather plummy red and settled in.
This was less a lounge and more a culinary interrogation, and we were the willing subjects.
We ate with the quiet determination of people who knew they were about to be served aeroplane food in the not-too-distant future.
Amenities: A Sanctuary for the Modern Traveller
After our little impromptu banquet, it was time to get comfortable. The lounge, it transpired, was a masterclass in modern convenience. A triumph of design, if you will.
- Plush seating areas: We found a couple of armchairs that were so comfortable we nearly dozed off. They were placed strategically away from the main thoroughfare, offering a sense of privacy.
- A strong, reliable Wi-Fi signal: A simple luxury, yet so often overlooked. We managed to stream a terrible reality TV show without a single buffer. It was glorious.
- Dedicated work spaces: For those masochists who simply cannot switch off. They were there, complete with power outlets, just in case we felt the urge to respond to a particularly urgent email. We decided against it. We were on holiday, and frankly, we’d earned a break.
- Clean restrooms and showers: A genuine godsend. There is nothing quite like a quick spritz to wash away the lingering sense of travel-related grime. We didn’t use the showers, but we were comforted by the fact that they were there, just in case.
This was it, we thought. This was the life. Sitting in an armchair, sipping on mediocre wine, and watching someone else’s mundane life unfold on screen.
We had transcended the bog-standard travel experience.
A Lounge Experience Worth the Price
We stayed for a solid three to four hours. We read. We scrolled. We ate and drank and sat in silence, which, for a couple, is an achievement in itself.
When the time came to leave, we felt a pang of genuine regret. We were well-fed, well-rested, and in a state of relative calm. It had been worth every penny.
The Prima Vista Lounge is not just a place to wait for your flight. It’s a little slice of tranquility, a brief respite from the frantic pace of the outside world. It is, we concluded, a perfectly agreeable way to begin a long journey.
We walked back into the terminal and headed to our gate where passengers were beginning to board for the long-haul flight to Malaysia.
We were ready for anything. We had, after all, had a biscuit.
