Our Sri Lanka travel plan was designed as a 21-day rollicking rollercoaster of a ride to the World’s End  and beyond. It promised to be an eventful trip, taking in the central highlands around Kandy and Sigiriya . followed by Haputale – the largely Muslim town above the clouds. After that we’d be heading down to the endless beaches of the south coast. Check out our Plan, Maps and Budget  for this 3-week round trip.
Beneath the Knuckle Mountains
Emerging into a clearing we could see the Knuckle Mountains bathed in mist in the distance. Easy to see how these mountains got their name.
Ceylonica Beach Hotel Negombo
First stop in Sri Lanka? don't be put off: The beaches around the Ceylonica Beach Hotel Negombo aren't the best this island has to offer…
Temple of the Tooth in Kandy
According to Temple of the Tooth legend, when the Buddha was cremated in India in 543 BC a canine tooth was retrieved from the funeral pyre.
Polwaththa Eco Lodge
At night, hidden deep in the jungles around the Polwaththa Eco lodge, you can just imagine your own “cabin slasher" movie...
Sri Lanka - 21-day Budget & Costs
A whistlestop tour of the Central Highlands and South Coast, but how much did our 21-day tour of Sri Lanka cost? and did we manage to stay within budget?
Jungle Beach, Sri Lanka
Jungle Beach is well worth the walk from Unawatuna town - a perfect place for swimming and snorkeling. There's good food to be had as well
Paradise Inn Sigiriya
Some guesthouses - like Paradise Inn Sigiriya - overbook, and then try to fob you off with alternative (invariably inferior) accommodation.
Tangalle Beaches - Tantalizing Tangalle
Tangalle beaches boast some terrifically long, unadulterated stretches extending for around 8 or 9 kms eastwards as far as Turtle Point.
SandSpice Coffee Mug
Coffee, tea, or art? Have it all with this eye-opening ceramic mug. Holds 11 oz. (325 ml). Mug diameter is 3.2" (8.2 cm), not including handle
Galle Fort, Sri Lanka
Outside the fort we tried what I can only describe as Ceylonese-style fast food: A posh and sanitized version of street food. Quite a change from the excellent Galle Fort Indian Hut restaurant.
Sri Lanka Central and South
A 21-day rollicking rollercoaster of a ride through from the mountainous World’s End & beyond to the infinite beaches of Tangalle.
World’s End Sri Lanka - Above the Clouds
The big attraction of Haputale for many travellers is the chance to visit the renowned plateau at Horton Plains.
Lion Rock, Sigiriya Sri Lanka
An ancient Lion Rock buddhist settlement built on a massive column of rock. Monkeys, elephants and crocodiles - What more do you want?
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, Kandy
The poop from Pinnawala elephant orphanage has its uses: Need recyled paper made from elephant dung? Great for those "Don't Forget" notes...
Palm Paradise Cabanas Tangalle
Palm Paradise Cabanas, Sri Lanka: Close to a picturesque beach - and loud disco music. Get a cabin towards the back if you want to sleep.
Sigiriya Temple Worshippers
Some guesthouses - like Paradise Inn Sigiriya - overbook, and then try to fob you off with alternative (invariably inferior) accommodation.
Kandy Lake, Sri Lanka
Kandy Lake Comfort Hotel - A peaceful lakeside hotel: There were signs on the doors saying "Beware monkeys". They weren't kidding...
