Which Transport to Choose?
Before coming to the Philippines, we read a lot of articles about people being ripped off by trikes and taxi drivers. We were therefore initially wary on the occasions we decided to use trikes and taxis.
However, as with a lot of the other information we read online about this country, our fears turned out to be groundless. On every taxi trip we took, the driver switched on his meter and the final fare was never more than we expected.
In fact, on a couple of occasions it was considerably cheaper. The taxi drivers were also pleasant, inquisitive and talkative.
We normally reserved taxi rides for journeys from and to the airport, or when travelling on time-critical journeys.
Philippines trikes
Whenever time wasn’t a factor, we took buses as first choice. If there were no buses going in our direction, we’d hop onto a Jeepney or flag down a motorized trike.
Very occasionally, none of the above were available. We then relied on shanks’ pony.

As we traveled around the Philippines, we saw a lot of motorcyclists with covered faces. It’s not a bad idea if you travel around by motorbike and want to avoid the dust. It also looks pretty cool when you add a pair of shades!
Trikes: Quintessential Filipino Ride
Tricycles, or “trikes” as they are commonly known, are a staple of Philippine transportation. These motorized three-wheelers are a common sight on the streets, particularly in smaller towns and rural areas. They are designed to carry passengers in a sidecar attached to a motorcycle.
One of the biggest advantages of using trikes is their availability. They are easy to hail on the streets and often serve routes that are not covered by larger vehicles. Trikes can navigate narrow roads and alleyways, making them a convenient option for short distances.
Fares for trikes are generally affordable. However, it’s important to note that prices can vary based on the distance and location. Always agree on the fare before starting your journey to avoid any misunderstandings.
Trikes: The Quintessential Filipino Ride
While trikes offer a unique and local experience, they may not always provide the most comfortable or safest ride, especially for longer distances. They are best used for short trips within towns or cities.
For some of the more out of the way places (Pangangan for example), once you’ve found a trike it’s a good idea to take the driver’s mobile number. After nightfall, it’s not always that easy to find transport, and this is the time you really don’t want to be walking through deserted areas.
Apart from the possibility of being mugged, you’re just as likely to stumble into a hole or ditch.
During our stay in Panglao, we learned from the owner of our guesthouse that muggings are not uncommon. Care should be taken if travelling at night through out-of-the-way places on foot.
Taxis: Comfort and Reliability
Taxis are a common sight in the larger cities of the Philippines, such as Manila, Cebu, and Davao. They offer a more comfortable and reliable means of transportation, especially for tourists.
Taxis can be easily found at major transport hubs, hotels, and popular tourist spots. Additionally, ride-hailing apps like Grab have become increasingly popular, allowing you to book a taxi with just a few taps on your smartphone.
Taxis in the Philippines are generally metered, which means you pay based on the distance traveled. However, in some cases, drivers may offer a fixed rate, especially for long-distance trips. Always ensure the meter is running or agree on a fare beforehand.
For a safe taxi experience, always choose a registered taxi service. Note down the taxi’s plate number and the driver’s ID displayed inside the vehicle. Avoid sharing a taxi with strangers and trust your instincts if something feels off.
Jeepneys: The Filipino Icon
No trip to the Philippines is complete without riding a jeepney. These colorful and uniquely decorated vehicles are an iconic mode of public transportation in the country.
Jeepneys have a rich history, originally repurposed from military jeeps left behind after World War II. They have since evolved into the beloved “kings of the road” and are a symbol of Filipino creativity and resourcefulness.

Buses: Long-Distance & City Travel
Buses are a good choice for both long-distance travel between provinces and short commutes within cities.
In the Philippines, you will find various types of buses, from air-conditioned luxury coaches to regular city buses. For long-distance travel, it’s advisable to opt for air-conditioned buses for a more comfortable journey.
Tickets for long-distance buses can be purchased at bus terminals or ideally online through a booking platform like 12Go.Asia. Fares vary based on the distance, type of bus, and service provider.
For long journeys, it’s wise to bring snacks, water, and entertainment to keep yourself comfortable. Arrive early at the terminal to secure good seats, especially during peak travel seasons.
Trains: Urban Connectivity
While the train network in the Philippines is limited compared to other countries, it still plays a significant role in urban transportation, particularly in Metro Manila.
LRT and MRT
Metro Manila is served by two main train lines: the Light Rail Transit (LRT) and the Metro Rail Transit (MRT). These trains are an efficient way to avoid traffic congestion and travel quickly across the city.
Tickets can be purchased at train stations either through ticket counters or automated machines. It’s recommended to buy a stored value card for convenience, especially for frequent travel.

Trains can get extremely crowded during rush hours. To avoid the crowds, plan your journey during off-peak times. Be mindful of your belongings and stay alert in busy stations.
Ferries and Boats: Island Hopping
Given the archipelagic nature of the Philippines, ferries and boats are essential for island-hopping adventures.
From large ferries to small outrigger boats (bangkas), there are various options to suit different travel needs. Ferries are ideal for longer journeys between major islands, while bangkas are perfect for shorter trips and exploring smaller islands.

Some popular ferry routes include Manila to Cebu, Cebu to Bohol, and Iloilo to Bacolod. For a more adventurous experience, consider taking a bangka to visit lesser-known islands and hidden beaches.
E-Trikes and E-Jeepneys: Eco-Friendly Options
In recent years, the Philippines has been making strides toward eco-friendly transportation options with the introduction of electric tricycles (e-trikes) and electric jeepneys (e-jeepneys).
E-trikes and e-jeepneys offer a cleaner and quieter alternative to their traditional counterparts. They are becoming increasingly available in major cities and tourist areas.
